Cortex Camera App Reviews

Best resolution thus far

Ive tried nearly every camera app in the store and none are as crisp as this. Granted only so much anyone can do with iPhone however this app is better than most. Again, dont move and hold steady for better shot. Seems older versions worked better, although might just be me. Great for scenic shots. Would be nice if the merge capabilities were a bit better with hand shakes, but its obvious the devs have done well. Always eager for updates. Good job.

Almost magical!

This app significantly improves the quality *and* resolution of iPhone photos.

Great app for iPhone, but is NOT a DSLR replacement

After reading a few of the comments, I had to stop what I was doing and write a review for the sake of those who do not understand digital cameras and photography in general. I am a professional photographer who has been shooting since 1975 and currently uses high-end digital DSLR gear. And my iPhone 65 Plus. : ) You know that saying… “the best camera is the one you have with you”? Well, my iPhone ends up being that one a high percentage of the time. 1. Cortex Camera IS a great app - if you are going to use the iPhone to shoot the image. It DOES outperform the native camera app and even some of the other better and more sophisticated camera app replacements due to its ability to manage the digital noise issue. In low light, Cortex Camera is my current go-to app and the statements made about it on the App Store are generally accurate, except for it being a DSLR replacement. 2. There is NO WAY this app is going to outperform a high-end DSLR and anyone who says it will is either inexperienced and doesn’t know better, or is misleading you. A high-end (full frame sensor) DSLR has a sensor chip that measures approx. 36mm x 24mm. It’s light gathering power and dynamic range is huge and will leave 100% of all smartphone cameras in the dust, regardless of the brand. Because of the dynamic range issue, high-end DSLR’s can literally see in the dark and I have yet to see any smartphone of any brand that can do that with current technology. Get the mm specs on the sensor in your smartphone and see what size it is. You will quickly see the difference. Case in point, my iPhone 6 Plus sensor is 7.62mm x 7.62mm. You cannot take a chip that small and expect it to match the DSLR’s capability. If any smartphone today could match the image quality of a professional DSLR, then pros would save the money and the weight and use smartphones instead of spending $10K-$15K for camera systems. So let’s put to rest the statements of “as good as a DSLR”. Folks, it ain’t gonna happen! OK… : ) 3. But if you are content to use your smartphone to shoot an image in low light, then this is your app. It appears to be as good as it gets with the current apps out there.

Excellence

The pictures that Cortex Camera takes are startlingly good, with exceptional clarity and very low noise. Dim lighting is no obstacle, and in good light the results can with some justification be called jaw-dropping. Several times now Ive thought to myself "did I really take this picture with my phone?" And with the latest updates inclusion of manual exposure controls, Cortex Camera has become my flat out favorite app for picture taking.

Love the new Options, couple suggestions

I love the new inclusion of automatic modes. Couple of suggestions: - can we blend the image before noise reduction is applied to the base images? This is possible in theory due to the raw capability for iphone 6s and 7. -if you add single frame raw capture in app, then it will be the only photo app that people ever needs -possibly save all cortex images to a separate album

Everything I can think of is perfect

The stabilization is great. Everything gets a crisp border. Large uniform areas become clean and smooth, with no visible noise. Huge resolution and tons of detail. Cortex has real zooming. When you zoom in with the regular Camera, you just get a cropped photo. When you zoom in with Cortex, it exposes and processes for slightly longer, to give you more detail and the same resolution. File sizes are very reasonable. For my iPod Touch 6, Cortex JPEGs are only about 1.7x the file size of regular photos. Cortex captures location data just like the built-in Camera. The geotags can be seen in Photos. For still scenes, Cortex can completely replace the built-in Camera. This is truly one of the best apps Ive ever used.

Enhance!

Its quite possible that this is the best camera app in the App Store. The picture is crystal clear from the front and back camera. The developer has done an excellent job focusing on quality and taking time to make sure a feature is ready.

Recent update is freakishly good at night photos

As an avid user of the iPhone’s camera, I can say that this app takes better nighttime photos. Cortex cam even takes better photos than the iPhone6 in some normal-lighting situations. The recent update has given manual controls, and increasing the number of frames shot to calculate a stabilized photo has greatly increased the resolution. The example images on this application are under selling it, I would say. Its far better than what you see there. Caveats: If you are not used to taking pro photos, you may not notice the improvements. I don’t always walk around with a DSLR, but still want to get the best I can when i only have the iPhone. iPhone6 made huge leaps, but zoomed low-light shots are still wonky. Cortex gives you that back (as best you can have it on an iPhone) — though when you are low-light + zoom + extreme brightness mixed with [architectural] details (like lots of neon on a sculpture) then you will get minor washout of the colors. Except this situation, the the photos will be better than iPhone6. Caveats: you need to mount the shot, or use some kind of bracing. A long exposure time is used to gather enough information to improve the image. If you hand-shoot, you’ll limit the range of shots that you can meaningfully make. Naturally, if your target is in low-light and moving or changing colors, you may not be as pleased with the shot compared with a faster shot that is more grainy. In normal lighting shots, I found that only the smallest of details were resolved better, and when saving in PNG mode. E.G. the lettering on distant signs was garbled on iPhone6, but clear with Cortex cam. Most general information does not appear to be improved, so the casual shooter will not see value. I also found that I had better color rendering in the medium-light shots, especially with reflections.

Needs to updated for the 7 plus

Needs to be updated to use the Telephoto lens in the 7 plus

Front camera crashes

iPhone7, taking a shot with front camera crashes the app.

Need to fix issues

Has great potential. Good when it works. Mine keeps crashing the higher frames I go

front cam crashes

checking please

Crash

It crashes every time I take a picture in this version

Please get rid of the default shutter sound

I am unfortunate enough to live in one of the two countries in the world that has a law that mandates cameras to have a madly conspicuous shutter sound thanks to so many perverts taking pictures of random womens random body parts in the streets, and now I am even more unfortunate enough to have my fave app with a default shutter sound. Please get rid of it. I live in Republic of Korea by the way. The other country of the two is Japan. Cheers to the citizens of these countries.

Impressive improvements in medium-low light

Updated for v2.1: On the iPhone 7 Plus, this app still reigns supreme in terms of image quality for still subjects. All the cool new stuff like RAW capture and dual lens are supported. One suggestion to get the most out of it: Use a tripod or other object to steady the phone when using this app - result will be dramatically better. --- old review, still true --- Have been using this app since iPhone 4; image quality is ridiculously better than any other app (... But then I have only bought 20-30 camera apps, there might be something better out there ..). Works best (most significant difference) in medium-low lighting and works great on iPhone 6 plus after the last iOS 8 compatible update. (Addendum: needs some work on iPhone 6 plus, some square areas show high color nice and low resolution). Hoping for a fix soon!

Crash

Crash in all shots

I loved this apps but..

In the japanese or korean version of iPhones.. There is a very big noise of camera shutter sound. Please fix for the mute sound like the previous version.

My favorite «camera» application on iOS

Excellent and simple application. Very good image quality, especially if used with tripod. RAW image source makes it the best app of its sort that ive used.

Essential Photography App

Amazing improvement in the quality of images in low light. I have relied on this app for years whenever I want to bump up image quality and eliminate graininess on still subjects.

Bug in current version

On my iPhone 6s, this version takes consistently out of focus pictures. The previous version didnt have this problem.
